2015 Subaru WRX STI Nürburgring 24 Hour Race Car

We’ve already talked about how much we like the 2015 WRX STI, and the good folks at Subaru Technica Institute have now shown off the slightly beefier version that they’ll be using in the upcoming Nürburgring 24-Hour Endurance Race, which begins on June 19th. The press release, which follows, is light on technical details as the specs of the production car have yet to be released, but we can at least say that the car will, if nothing else, at least look great out on the ‘ring.

Here’s the full, unmodified press release:

Nürburgring 24-Hour Race

STI will participate in the Nürburgring 24-Hour Race (from 19 to 22 June in Germany) for seven consecutive years, with a vehicle whose performance has been enhanced from its base car – the all-new Subaru WRX STI to be revealed at the 2014 North American International Auto Show in Detroit. With the new driving machine’s participation in this race, FHI and STI enhanced mutual cooperation to develop a racing car which boasts a higher level of competitiveness by utilizing the technologies of Subaru’s mass-produced models. STI will aim at its third victory in the SP3T class this year following the 24-hour race in 2012. Through the participation in the race that demands speed and stability, Subaru will further enhance its engineering excellence.
Like last year, Hideharu Tatsumi will take the helm of team operations as team manager, in addition to the development of the car. As for team drivers, Toshihiro Yoshida and Kouta Sasaki both from Japan will be listed, adding two more drivers from Europe.”

This Week at Carwrex: Here’s to the Future!

Rex’s ever-relentless work ethic continues, but sometimes it’s nice to sit back and catch up on what’s going on in the world around us. After all, 2014 is upon us, and with a new year comes new opportunities, new ideas, and, of course, new Subarus. Subaru has been showing off some pretty exciting new designs, and Rex can’t wait to see them hit the streets. From updated versions of current favorites to refreshing new concepts, Subaru fans (like Rex!) have got plenty to look forward to in the next year. Here’s a few of our favorites:

Of course we’re excited about the new STI. It’s taken a while, but three years and one gorgeous concept later we’ve finally gotten a solid look at the 2015 STI and, well, it’s beautiful. All the hallmarks are here: that blue and gold paint scheme, those curvy flares, and that iconic scoop and wing combo. This time, though, it’s a little more refined, a little more sleek, a little more…mature?

Sure, we’re still not going to be accusing the STI of subtlety anytime soon, but this new version is certainly more refined than the older models (which we still love, mind you), with a modern elegance to the body lines that brings the form up to par with the function.

Make no mistake, the STI still looks like a race car (if the aggressive front fascia doesn’t clue you in that something wicked is lurking inside, the chunky rear spoiler certainly will), but it looks a bit more civilized, like it would spend its downtime talking corner exit strategies with its contemporaries at the local track, rather than hunting Mustangs and Camaros like its older brethren.

What we’re trying to say is, we like it. A lot.

Will this thing make it to production? Who knows, but we certainly hope so. Why? Just look at it.

Need more reasoning? Fine: It’s basically a slightly lifted, hatchback BRZ. The BRZ is, for our money, one of the most exciting cars on the market today, with its great handling and focus on fun above all else, but you do have to sacrifice a bit of practicality if you want it for your daily driver, giving up a bit of storage space and losing a bit of the ruggedness that Subarus are renowned for.

Give it an extra couple inches of ground clearance and add some storage capacity, and you should have one of the single most fun cars on the market without sacrificing anything. It’s a win/win all around; let’s just hope it makes it to production.

“Turbocharger + Wagon” has been a winning combination for Subaru in the past, and this looks to continue the streak. Appearing as a slightly bigger brother to the Legacy, this “Sports Estate” has all the ingredients to be a huge winner. The styling is phenomenal, with strong, purposeful lines that rival any ‘luxury’ wagon, and the interior is downright beautiful:

The car will be offered with two turbocharged boxer engines: a 1.6L that’s good for around 170hp, and a 2.0L that pushes into STI territory at roughly 300hp. This thing should be amazingly comfortable, practical, and, well, it should be an absolute blast to drive. Unfortunately, there’s a catch: It’s Japan only for now.
